Special dog
Every animal that comes to the
Escondido Humane Society touches us in some way. But every now and then
one comes to us that really tugs at our heart. One such dog is Luna, a
2-year-old Chihuahua mix. Luna came to the Escondido Humane Society
when a good Samaritan picked her up off the streets in Escondido, badly
injured from what appeared to be an attack by a larger animal. But that
wasn't all: Luna was also pregnant with three puppies. She had to
undergo an emergency C-section, and, sadly, her puppies were too
premature and didn't make it.
But
that wasn't the end of her story: Luna can no longer use her back legs
as a result of her injuries from the attack. Luna was quickly taken
under our wings, and she is now in a loving foster home where she is
beginning to thrive. What about her back legs, you ask? Take a look at
the following photos to see how Luna is now getting around.

Adopt-A-Senior-Pet Month
Sadly,
older pets are often overlooked by their younger counterparts, but
these precious pets deserve to live out their golden years in loving
homes. To help them find their new families, we are cutting seniors' adoption fees in half in November,
which is Adopt-A-Senior-Pet Month. That means you can adopt any animal
older than 7 years for just $27.50! Adoption fee includes microchip,
up-to-date vaccinations, spay or neuter, and more!Log on to http://www.escondidohumanesociety.org/ for more information and to meet our adoptable animals. The Escondido Humane Society Adoption Center is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. seven days a week.

Keep your pets safe this Halloween
Halloween
may be fun for us humans, but it can be a scary and dangerous time for
our pets. Here are some tips for keeping your four-legged friends safe
and happy this Halloween (source: aspca.org):Skip the sweets: Several popular Halloween treats are toxic to pets. Chocolate is especially dangerous, particularly to dogs.
Watch out for those wrappers:
Cats especially love to play with candy wrappers, but ingesting
aluminum foil or cellophane can cause intestinal blockage and induce
vomiting.
Trick-or-treating is for kids, not pets:
During trick-or-treating hours it is best to keep pets in a room away
from your front door. Make sure your pet is wearing a collar with tags
and/or is microchipped.
Careful with costumes:
If you dress up your pet for Halloween, make sure the costume does not
limit his movement, hearing, sight or ability to breathe or bark. Also
check the costume for choking hazards.
Decorations can be dangerous:
Re-think putting candles in Jack-O-Lanterns. Also take care to prevent
your pets from having access to wires and cords from holiday
decorations.
ID's please:
When opening the door for trick-or-treaters, make sure your cat or dog
doesn't dart outside. Make sure your dog or cat has proper
identification and is microchipped for a safe return if lost. If your
pet is lost in the cities of Escondido, San Marcos or Poway, contact
Escondido Humane Society Animal Control at (760) 888-BARK.
From everyone here at the Escondido Humane Society, have a safe and fun Halloween!
